Your Spare Change Can Change Lives

UVic students: on November 2, 3 and 4, vote yes to increase WUSC’s Student Refugee Program funding by $1.00 so we can sponsor a fourth student. Your spare change can change lives!

ncreasing the fee students pay to fund the Student Refugee Program by $1.00 per full time student and $0.50 per part-time student per semester will allow the UVic World University Service of Canada (WUSC) local committee to sponsor four refugee students to resettle in Victoria and continue their education at UVic.

Currently, UVic WUSC is able to sponsor three refugees every year to come study at UVic. The funds needed for the sponsorship come from student fees ($1.50 per full-time undergrad and $2.00 per full-time grad student per semester) and from a yearly donation from the UVic administration. This pays for the three sponsored students’ tuition, housing, and living costs for their first year in Canada. By raising the amount full-time students pay each semester by $1.00, UVic WUSC can sponsor four students each year.

In recent years, sponsored students have come from refugee camps in Kenya and their countries of origin have been places like Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda. There are many, many more deserving refugee students who apply to come to Canada through the Student Refugee Program than there are spots.

The Student Refugee Program gives sponsored students the opportunity to begin a new life in Canada. By voting yes and donating one dollar more a semester – the price of a cup of coffee, or a chocolate bar – your spare change can change lives.

IMPORTANT: This year, the UVSS has switched to online elections! Starting at 9:00 am on Nov. 2, you can log in with your Netlink ID at webvote.uvic.ca and VOTE YES to support UVic’s SRP!

My thanks to WUSC and UVic is unlimited. They have added a salt to salt-less food to make it tasty. The fact is that, WUSC has become a famous organization all over the camps in Kenya due to its wonderful positive impact on the refugee students. The old fathers and mothers are aware of WUSC because they hear and see students sponsored by WUSC. Sometimes WUSC is a topic for discussion at Hagadera stress corner (a place in one of the Dadaab camps where youths come together and have afternoon tea). Youths ask themselves, how many students is WUSC sponsoring this year? How many students qualified for WUSC sponsorship this year? One of my friends in the camp once asked me this question: “Education in Canada is qualitative like that of USA, this organization called WUSC is taking a good position of educating the less privileged ones, but why not USA?” I had no answer for it because I knew little about thinking outside the box.

Growing up in a less privileged community has not only offered financial and academic challenges, but it has more importantly made me realize the value of post secondary education. Sponsorship can be a good way to make a significant impact on an underprivileged youths for a relatively small contribution. UVic students are so generous and your generosity overwhelmed me. I encourage you to keep on assisting the needy youths in the different refugee camps around the world so that they build their future and become useful gents and ladies.

Changing my life is indirectly changing the lives of many others that you don’t know (those who made me who I am today) and they are very grateful for your support.

Special thanks to who ever took part my sponsorship of this year. Thank you for being a donor to my sponsorship. I am honoured to be one of the recipients of this tremendous gift. Thanks to your generous support, I am proud to be a first year student at university of Victoria. One day in my days and one specific time in my times I will be a graduate student if all those years I am alive.

UVic WUSC local committee, UVic administrators, professors, students: big thanks to all of you and to everyone who made my sponsorship possible. Thanks again for your generosity and support. You have changed my life because I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and I still expect so many positives and big welcomes from your sides. “Thank you” is becoming monotonous in my writing but that is how it should be, as mere words cannot convey my gratitude. I will leave you this way with this expression, “thank you so much”.
